“WHO IS PROJECTED TO HAVE A GOOD YEAR? PI continues its look into the second quarter Lobbying Disclosure Act numbers with a somewhat arbitrary snapshot of the financial health and growth potential of a few K Street government relations firms — both large, small and in between. In its rough estimation, six firms in its sample — Thorn Run, Crossroads Strategies, Gephardt Group, Republic Consulting, Daly Consulting Group and Shockey Scofield Solutions — are projected to see double-digit growth if they keep up current rate of billings. None of those firms are in the top 20 largest lobbying firms in the city — showing that boutique K Street operations are still where a lot of the growth is. Other firms projected to grow modestly this year: TwinLogic, Clark Geduldig Cranford & Nielsen, Fierce Isakowitz and Elmendorf Ryan — all outside the top 20. Other firms like Heather Podesta + Partners, Liberty Partners Group and Franklin Square Group are about on pace to do the same amount of business as last year.”

“The current bill, which is sponsored by 45 Senators on both sides of the aisle, has received the heavy artillery treatment from influential gun rights groups. Out of the 52 lobbyists who listed the almost identical S.1996 bill of the same name on their disclosure reports in the first quarter of 2014, close to half represented the NRA or the militant hunters’ rights group Safari Club International; the two organizations used both in-house lobbyists and the firm Crossroads Strategies. Lobbying information on the current bill, which was introduced in May, isn’t yet available.”

“FIRST IN PI … JAKE PERRY, CROSSROADS TO MERGE: Crossroads Strategies announced Wednesday that lobbyist Jake Perry would be merging his firm Jake Perry + Partners with Crossroads in June. Perry is a prominent Democratic strategist with more than a decade of Washington experience and deep ties to Senate Democrats. He’s a former top adviser and fundraiser to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and he later helped co-found the Democratic super PAC Senate Majority PAC. Perry left Reid’s orbit in early 2013 to hang a shingle with Jake Perry + Partners. As of the first quarter of 2014, he has five clients and about $140,000 in billings in that quarter. “Jake brings strategic vision with a proven ability as a top advocator within the Senate Democratic Caucus as well as tested experience as a political operative,” Crossroads Strategies co-founder Stewart Hall said in a statement. Crossroads Strategies has no connection to the fundraising network founded by Karl Rove.”

“Of course fluctuations in head counts can go both ways. At the beginning of the year, a half-dozen lobbyists left Oglivy to form the government affairs group Thorn Run Partners and the lobbying firm Crossroads Strategies, which affected the firm’s bottom line. Ogilvy brought in about $4 million less from federal lobbying work in 2010 than it did in 2009, reflecting its diminished workforce. In recent weeks Ogilvy bolstered its staff by bringing in several health care specialists in anticipation of challenges to the health care law. A spokesman said there would be more hires in 2011 as the firm repositions.”
